A More Complete Backstory

Born the only daughter to a minor house of nobility in Ishgard, Odile's early years were filled with classes from a private tutor, morphing her into a genteel woman. The classes included everything her parents could think of, from penmanship to household management to dance lessons. She was often found, however, reading and rereading any book she could get her hand on, usually whilst curled up on her bed. It was even said in the Vremaix household that that was the reason the heir required such a thick lens for her glasses.

Her parents were a bit distant, but the home was mostly a happy one. Made even happier when, at the age of ten, she found an egg on a trip to Falcon's Nest, which eventually grew into a beautiful griffin Odile named Tallis. Late at night, she'd cuddle in her bedroom with the small creature and dream of fighting the dragons by studying astrology when she grew up.

This happiness continued right up until Odile's fifteenth birthday. Shortly before her coming out party, her parents were outed as heretics. During her parent's execution, the housemaid, a hyur woman named Adney Tucker, brokered a deal with a pirate captain named Awyrrael to secure their passage to somewhere safe. That ended up being Limsa Lominsa, and they were there within a fortnight.

Upon their arrival, Adney set to work, finding employment as a culinarian to feed both the refugees. Having her life turned flip upside down, the feeling of grief over her parents' sudden death was consumed by her resentment. More than once, Adney would shoo away Tallis, unable to feed three mouths, but Odile would simply hand over half her meal to the creature as it grew. Over the ten years she spent in Limsa Lominsa, eventually, the griffin grew enough to hunt on its own, but Odile still can be sneaking snacks to Tallis whenever she can.

The one bright light in their exile was the books. Odile had previously been rather limited in her supply of books, being restricted mostly to textbooks and those relating to the business of economics and her parents. Now that every book she could imagine was available to her, she went nuts. Every single word of every single page she came across was devoured, but she developed a particular taste for bawdy books. She kept a secret stash of such books under her bed and away from the prying eyes of Adney.

It was during this time she also met Theodoric, a displaced Ala Mhigan, and he introduced her to arcanima. He was a summoner and he amazed her with his magical prowess, and they were soon close friends. He even managed to smuggle some astrology books to her from Ishgard. Then, one day, he went to sea and never returned. Thus ended her first crush. She still cherishes the one or two books he gave to her, and is highly protective of them.
